How does a French drain work?

A perimeter drain (also called a French drain) is a drainage system installed at the base of the foundation footing, which directs rainwater and groundwater away from your house or building. The drain pipes must carry the water to a sewer or a ditch. A property often has several French drains installed all around the foundations. It is mandatory for houses and businesses under construction to have French drains installed.

The French drain pipe system is buried deeply at the location that accumulates the most water. The pump sends the water into the pipes, then discharges it away from the foundation walls. This efficient system reduces moisture in the basement and prevents the degradation of the concrete. It also helps prevent the formation of cracks in the concrete, as well as water infiltration into your basement. The concrete does not constantly undergo water pressure and will be less likely to deteriorate or crack.

Installation and Replacement of French Drains

After excavation, the French drain is laid on undisturbed or compacted soil. The system is installed with a slight slope to encourage natural water flow. It is covered with a geotextile membrane, then with 12 inches of crushed stone. Another geotextile membrane is added over the crushed stone to prevent debris and fine particles from entering.

The excavation is carried out in an ultra-safe manner and as respectfully as possible towards your landscaping. We try to dig with great precision to minimize the excavated area. We then replace the soil and level it, leaving a slight slope to facilitate the flow of rainwater. All debris is removed before our departure.

At the same time as the installation or replacement of your French drain, we can apply a liquid waterproofing membrane on your foundation walls, followed by a waterproofing membrane with air cells that protect your concrete and facilitate water flow. This durable membrane repels water and moisture while insulating your basement.
